Cleantech A - Z
Geothermal Energy
Energy generated by heat stored beneath the Earth's surface, which includes natural steam, hot water, hot rocks or lava. The hot water or steam can be piped to the surface and then used to turn a steam turbine to generate electricity. It can also be obtained by piping water underground to extract heat from hot, dry rocks. the heat is then returned to the surface to turn a steam turbine and generate electricity. Geothermal energy can be used directly for heating or to produce electric power.
Gigawatt (gw)
A unit of power equal to 1 billion Watts, 1 million kilowatts, or 1,000 megawatts.
Global Warming
Often used interchangably with 'climate change,; global warming refers to a change in global temperatures and weather patterns over time, either due to natural or human activity. The progressive gradual rise of the earth's surface temperature is thought to be caused by the greenhouse effect and responsible for changes in global climate patterns.
Gray Water
Residential wastewater from household activities such as dish washing, bathing, and laundry, that does not contain serious pollutants, and can be recycled, reclaimed or recused to water plants or wash cars. Water from dishwashers and toilets is NOT included.
Green
Environmentally sound.
Green Building
A comprehensive process of design and construction that employs techniques to minimize adverse environmental impacts and reduce the energy consumption of a building, while contributing to the health and productivity of its occupants. A common metric for green buildings is the LEED certification.
Green Design
The design of products, services, building, or experiences that are sensitive to environmental issues and achieve greater efficiency and effectiveness in terms of energy and materials.
Green-collar Jobs
Jobs involved in implementing sustainability in business, including the alternative energy, sustainable building and installation of sustainable systems. in the residential, commercial and government markets. Green-collar jobs fill a variety of community and individual needs with rewarding, well-paying work that is sustainable, local and not easily outsourced oversees.
Green Jobs Dividend
Green Power
A term for electricity produced from clean, renewable energy resources.
Green Tech
A term referring to a collection of new technologies and approaches that maximize human, environmental, and economic benefits.
Greenhouse Effect
The effect produced as greenhouse gases allow incoming solar radiation to pass through the earth’s atmosphere from escaping into space. This process occurs naturally and has kept the earth’s temperature about 59 degrees f warmer than it would otherwise be. Current life on earth could not be sustained without the natural greenhouse effect.
Greenhouse Gas
Gases produced from human activities that trap solar radiation and thus contribute to climate change and the destruction of the ozone layer. Greenhouse gases include, but are not limited to: water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydro chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), ozone, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).
Greenwashing
The practice of making misleading or unsubstantiated claims about the environmental benefits of a product or service, as well as positive association with environmental issues for an unsubstainable product, service or practice. The term merges the concepts of green and whitewashing.
Grid
Term referring to an electricity transmission and distribution system.
Grid-Connected System
A solar electric or photovoltaic (PV) system in which the PV array acts like a central generating plant, supplying power to the grid.
Grid Energy Storage
